The bridge girders are a part of a major rehabilitation project on a section of the privately owned highway 407 which had begun earlier this summer. After a few project delays, the material is anticipated to arrive at Blastech in October. With the Canadian winter fast approaching, the project will have a tight deadline to ensure the girders are installed before the frost hits the construction site.
The lifespan and integrity of the steel for this material is essential; therefore the surface will be prepared to specification SSPC-SP10 (Near White) using a sharp angular profile to provide the adhesion required for the zinc thermal spray application. Then an epoxy seal coat will be applied followed by a polyurethane top coat that will provide a polished and lasting finish when exposed to the elements.
The carefully chosen coating system will provide corrosion protection to the girders for decades to come.
