Blastech recently completed the comprehensive compliance audit and has met the requirements of the Association of the American Railroads (AAR) Quality Assurance Program as specified in M-1003. With over 30 years of experience in protective coating and rubber lining applications, the Blastech facility had undergone a major expansion to meet the industry demand for interior coating and lining of steel tank cars.

 

We have an exciting opportunity for an Inbound Rail Inspector / Railcar Technician to join our team! The Inspector / Technician will coordinator and complete rail car inspections and repairs, develop production and quality procedures and assist the management team with the growth and direction of our new rail department.

 

The ideal candidate will have practical experience in rail car operations and repairs, including certification and experience in welding.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee and coordinate the inspection, repairs and maintenance of inbound rail cars
  • Follow designed methods and procedures for safely servicing and inspecting rail cars, underframes, brakes, car safety appliances
  • Complete Quality Inspection forms, work orders and enter repairs in the billing system
  • Adhere to deadlines and ensure all repairs meet American Association of Railways (AAR) and quality compliance regulations
  • Administrative tasks, such as accurate time keeping, repair schedule and completion records
  • Involvement in the procurement of equipment, tools and processing improvements
  • Work with hand, power, pneumatic and hydraulic tools
  • Handle an assortment of complex equipment including Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding, oxy-fuel and plasma-arc cutting
  • Partner with procurement to ensure accurate supply levels and maintain inventory control
  • Be knowledgeable of manufacturers’ manuals, technical bulletins, parts bulletins, service or preventative maintenance manuals, fact sheets,  AAR field manuals and government regulations
  • Establish open communication with the management and production teams 
  • Provide a safe environment for employees by providing insightful coaching and training pertaining to the rail department

Qualifications
  • 5+ years’ practical experience in the rail car repair industry
  • Welding certification and experiences
  • Strong leadership skills with customer focus
  • Safety and results oriented with a solid mechanical background
  • Ability to direct and perform hands-on repair to railcars
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to coordinate multiple activities simultaneously
  • Ability to comply with instruction and comprehend published rules, procedures, inspection checklists, government regulations, operating and maintenance instructions and other work-related information
  • Working knowledge of railcar mechanical systems, including air brake, welding and fabrication
  • Thorough knowledge of CFR regulations  
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Solid computer skills and experience using MS Office Suite 
  • Conscious of quality standards, customer service and safety legislation
Preferred Skills
  • Fine motor skills to keyboard/type continuously
  • Ability to sit and/or stand continuously at workstation
  • Comfortable working in an industrial, dusty facility that performs abrasive blasting and chemical coating
  • Frequent exposure to chemicals and paints 
  • Personal protective equipment required in the facility
  • Travel may be required (less than 10%)
