Responsibilities
Operate spray painting equipment to apply protective coatings and paints to fabricated structural steel material.
- Prepare, set up, and test all paint spraying equipment prior to use to make sure all equipment is in working order.
- Apply surface materials when required to fill any surface imperfections. Inspect surface condition of substrate prior to coating and report any irregularities to immediate supervisor.
- Select and use various types of hand tools, abrasive sandpapers, and grinders.
- Understand and be able to recognize surfaces for painting readiness including the presence of grit.
- Prepare and mix coating materials in accordance with coating manufacturer’s specifications.
- Apply protective coatings to various types of surfaces (generally metal) using airless, air-assisted, conventional, electrostatic, pressurized air spray, high volume-low pressure, plural component paint spray equipment, thermal spray, brush, or roller.
- Measure coating film thicknesses dry and wet as required by job specifications.
- Clean all paint spraying equipment upon completion of use and report any defective parts or equipment maintenance required to immediate supervisor.
- Keep work area clean and free of debris.
- Knowledge of and demonstrable skills in basic cleaning and blasting procedures.
- Comprehension of basic product specifications, protective, environmental, and safety procedures.
- Comprehension of instructions relating to specific project such as marking details or masking instructions.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work for long hours at a time.
- Availability to travel away from home for days or weeks at a time.
- Basic communication skills.
- Ability to work at heights.
